The Economics of Spent Nuclear Fuel Storage

No event has highlighted the risks of nuclear waste storage better than the double disaster (tsunami and loss of coolant accident) at Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plants in Japan in March 2011.  Like the reactors themselves, spent nuclear fuel needs to be kept cool and the hydrogen explosions at four of the reactors created additional concern that loss of coolant in the pools could generate an even bigger crisis.  Meanwhile, spent nuclear fuel stored in dry casks near the edge of the ocean was unharmed, even by the tsunami wave.  Choices about where to store spent fuel must take into account safety and security, but also cost.
