This event will discuss agriculture consolidation with a focus on the proposed Bayer-Monsanto merger. Panelists will present two new research pieces on the Bayer-Monsanto merger. The first analysis explores the implications of a combined Big Data, chemical and seed platform owned by Bayer and Monsanto and how it may impact competition and farmer choice.
The second analysis examines how the Bayer-Monsanto merger uses the concept of market power called a “tight oligopoly on steroids” to examine the impacts of the Bayer-Monsanto merger on consumers.
Bill Bullard, Chief Executive Officer of the Ranchers-Cattlemen Action Legal Fund, United Stockgrowers of America. He is a former cow/calf rancher in South Dakota and served as Executive Director of the South Dakota Public Utilities Commission.
Ben Burkett, is a fourth generation farmer from Mississippi, Director of the Mississippi Association of Cooperatives and President of the National Family Farm Coalition. He is a recipient of the James Beard Leadership Award.
Mark Cooper, Ph. D, Senior Fellow at Consumer Federation of America and a Senior Fellow for Economic Analysis at the Institute for Energy and the Environment at Vermont Law School. He is author of six books (most recently The Political Economy of Electricity), numerous scholarly journal articles and research reports.
Leah Douglas, reporter and policy analyst at Open Markets Institute. She researches power consolidation and monopolization in the food and agriculture industry.
Joe Maxwell, Executive Director at Organization for Competitive Markets. He hails from a family farm in Missouri. He was a Missouri state representative, state senator, and Lt. Governor.
